The paper provides a comprehensive overview of stray losses in conductive structural parts of power transformers, addressing the effects of stray magnetic fields on simple conductive plates, the distribution of additional losses across structural components and measures for their reduction. It examines the (im)possibility of directly measuring stray losses and presents methods for their indirect measurement, highlighting the generation of fault gases due to thermal faults and the importance of understanding multiphysical (electromagnetic–thermal) coupling in calculating stray losses. A problem rarely mentioned in the literature but confirmed here by measurements, is the excessive heating of the connecting elements of the clamping system caused by circulating currents.
